What is Stuffed Toys

A stuffed toy is a toy doll with an outer fabric sewn from a textile and stuffed with flexible material. They are known by many names, such as plush toys, plushies, stuffed animals, and stuffies; in Britain and Australia, they may also be called soft toys or cuddly toys.

Benefits of Stuffed Toys

Develop your child's social skills
Children strengthen their social skills by playing with stuffed animals. They can learn how to be kind and nurturing by taking care of their plush toys. Interacting with stuffed animals prepares babies and toddlers for interacting with people.
While children naturally develop social skills with their toys, adults can use these toys to help teach lessons too. For example, an adult can pretend that a toy is in a situation that makes the toy “feel” an emotion, such as sadness, and then ask the child what they should do to help the toy feel better. The child's relationship with the toy can make it easier for them to learn from these make-believe scenarios.

Provide comfort and security
The next way that stuffed animals benefit child development is by helping kids feel safe. Children are naturally curious, but they also need to feel protected. Babies and toddlers especially need security, and a stuffed animal is a wonderful and simple way to achieve this.
Young ones can squeeze their soft toy to release stress and relieve anxiety. Stroking their toy animal's fur can also calm children and reassure them that everything is alright. Over time, a beloved toy can become more and more soothing to a child.

Practice language skills
A stuffed toy is the perfect listening friend for your blooming conversationalist. As babies babble, they learn the connection between their mouth movements and the sounds that will eventually create words. Adults can also play with babies, taking up the part of the stuffed animal and encouraging the baby to keep talking.
Toddlers can carry on conversations with their plushies and practice their communication skills. Even though stuffed animals don't talk, children will leave space to listen to their stuffed animals before they verbally respond.

Foster creativity and imagination
Finally, stuffed animals foster children's creativity and imagination. By engaging children's imaginations, toys build kids' confidence, problem-solving skills, dexterity, and strength. Children create imaginary worlds and overcome obstacles with their stuffed toys. And while these characteristics are developed in a play world, they become a part of how children interact in the real world.
Plush toys allow kids to move at their own pace and engage in their personal interests. One moment, your child might explore outer space with their toy. The next, your child might be back home, preparing an afternoon snack. In this magical time, anything is possible for your child and their companion.

Plushies VS. Stuffed Toys: What'S The Difference?

It's no secret that kids love stuffed toys, more commonly called plushies. They cling to and sleep with them, making them a comforting companion wherever they go. But as simple as it may seem, there are a few contrasts.
Although some folks may use the terms interchangeably, there is a difference between plushies and stuffed toys. We'll walk you through the differences and why it's important to know them, especially if you're a parent or caregiver.

The materials involved
Let's discuss the materials used to make plushies and stuffed toys. Typically, stuffed toys consist of durable synthetic fibers such as polyester or acrylic, which can hold their shape well. Stuffed toys also have plastic features attached to them to make their eyes and noses.
Conversely, plushies have softer fibers like cotton, making them squishy and huggable. Plushies tend to be more delicate than stuffed toys, so they need more care regarding their maintenance.

Different designs
Plushy and stuffed animal designs also vary. In most instances, stuffed animal manufacturers do their best to make them look like real animals, complete with fur, eyes, and facial features. They come in different sizes and textures, depending on the animal they represent.
Plushies, however, usually depict fictional characters, such as cartoon or video game characters. Plushies may also be as eccentric as food items, objects, or household items, making them more versatile.

Buyer's motivation
Stuffed toys are popular items to give as gifts, especially on special occasions such as holidays or birthdays. Children often receive stuffed toys as comforting toys or as a companion during moments of stress or anxiety.
Although plushies can serve the same purpose, they are more of a collectible item, specifically if they have pop culture relevance. Plushies also double as décor, either as a centerpiece or as an accent to a room's overall theme.

The intended audience
The demographics of each item can differ wildly. Your favorite stuffed toys have children in mind, approximately around ages three to seven. These stuffed toys are often very basic and have few features other than looking adorable.
Plushies are for all ages, making them versatile in terms of usage. Older children, teenagers, and even adults collect plushies as a hobby, making them a popular item for everyone.

Top 8 Fabrics For Stuffed Toys

FELT
Felt is one of the most versatile fabrics, so it makes sense that it's our number one fabric for stuffed toys. It's extremely light and has no grain, meaning you don't have to be a master seamstress to be able to work with it. Its flexibility in detailing makes it the best choice for hand-sewn plushie projects if you're not too comfortable with a sewing machine.

FLEECE
Like felt, fleece is also a great option for beginners in DIY plushie projects. This fabric is soft and has just the right amount of stretch (perfect for squishy plush toys!), yet it can still hold its shape. It's also available in a wide range of colors and patterns.

FAUX SUEDE
Faux suede is perfect if you want a stuffed animal that's not too fuzzy yet still extremely soft. However, you do want to take note to get “faux” suede instead of real suede, as real suede is technically leather and won't be good for plush toys at all!
Faux suede is also not that stretchy, so it can be challenging to work with, especially if you're a beginner. But we have to say it's worth it to be able to make plush toys from faux suede

COTTON
Cotton is a popular fabric for stuffed toys, but you don't see it being used that much anymore, mainly because it's not that soft and squishy. If you choose to work with this type of fabric, you will need a lot of stuffing to ensure that the seams don't pucker.
Here's a tip: you don't have to be limited to using cotton alone. Today, many companies opt to use this fabric as accents in their plush toys.

FAUX FUR
Faux fur is a bit expensive and difficult to work with, especially if you are a beginner at making stuffed toys. You will also rarely find stuffed toys made entirely from faux fur; usually, it is used for accents like long hair.
To work with faux fur, you must cut and sew through the back only to avoid wasting fur.

MINKY
Most stuffed toys available today are made from minky fabric — it's extremely smooth yet still stretchy and structured. You'll be able to create beautifully rounded stuffed toys with this versatile material, even as a beginner.
That being said, minky can be expensive, and the colors and prints can be limited. This fabric type also has a “right” side — meaning you'd have to sew following the grain.

POLYESTER
While polyester is more suitable for stuffing, it's also a great fabric for stuffed toys. It has great color retention, so you can expect that your stuffed toy will stay vibrant over the years. The fibers are stain-resistant.
Polyester is available in blends, so no two fabrics will have the same look and feel.

FLANNEL
Flannel doesn't have a lot of stretch, but it's more forgiving than cotton. This type of fabric is made from natural polyester blends, with many different styles and patterns available on the market.
On the downside, flannel isn't the most durable fabric for stuffed toys — it frays easily and will pill over time.

How To Get Rid Of Dust Mites On Stuffed Toys

Here to washed stuffed toys
Pop the stuffed toys into a laundry bag.
Use your usual detergent.
Add in 4-6 drops of tea tree essential oil as this is a natural disinfectant.
Reshape them when they come out of the wash.
Either hang them by the ears to dry or lay them flat too dry.
Give them a little dry brush with a soft brush to get them looking fluffy again.

In the freezer
Place the stuffed toys into a plastic bag and pop in the freezer for 24 hours and this will also kill the dust mites and bacteria. Once they have thawed out you can just put them in the dryer on a low setting for about 15-20 minutes to shake them up.

Vacuum
Another thing you can do is vacuum them. I know it sounds strange but a good vacuum every week using the nozzle removes the dust mites as well as dirt and fluffs up the fur at the same time.

Steam
For delicate stuffed toys, steam out the dirt and grime with a handheld steamer. The steam will sanitise the toy, making it safe for your child to cuddle with, steam will also help deep clean toys with batteries that can't go in the washing machine.
