Materials + Chemicals To Avoid In Children Furniture

Bisphenols BPA + BPS // Found in most plastic children furniture, aka everything kid related! BPA is a known endocrine disruptor and can cause reproductive harm, cancer, and obesity.

Formaldehyde // Found in many children furniture, bedding, and furniture. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can cause asthma and skin issues.

PVC // Found in most plastics, food packaging, children furniture, strollers and more, and a known human carcinogen! PVC often contains additives like phthalates and lead and is extremely toxic even after disposal.

Lead & other heavy metals // Often found in paint, clothing, children furniture, and furniture. Heavy metal toxicity (even exposure in very small amounts like in lead paint) can lead to developmental and behavioral issues and brain damage.

VOCs (volatile organic compounds) // Found in paints, furniture, rugs, and cleaning products can continue to “off-gas” into the air in your home for years. VOCs can create skin irritation and damage the liver and central nervous system.

Pesticides // Found in clothing, bedding, food, and known endocrine disruptors. Studies also show exposure can be linked to developmental issues, depression, autism, and nerve-cell communication.

9 Tips For Identifying Toxic-Free Children Furniture For Your Kids

Look for safety labels
You can evaluate the safety of a toy by looking for safety labels. For instance, the ASTM F963 label is an international standard for toy testing. You can also check for any tags from other governing bodies, such as CPSIA and the EU toy safety mark. These labels are typically small and easy to miss – but they're there.
Parents want their children to be healthy and safe. That's why it's important to ensure you're mindful of the children furniture your child plays with at home.

What to do if a toy is not marked safe
If a toy isn't marked safe, you can still test it. Consider using a simple test with vinegar:
Wash the toy with soap and water and then wipe it with vinegar. If it's clean, then it's safe.
If the wipe is stained or covered in mold or mildew after testing, avoid giving it to your kids – it's not safe.

Avoid children furniture made of PVC
One type of toy you certainly should avoid is polyvinyl chloride (PVC). PVC is often found in figurines and playsets to make them durable.
Children who chew on these children furniture could ingest chemicals from the paint on the plastic, which can be dangerous.
Chewing on children furniture is not a general recommendation since some paint contains lead. Lead is a dangerous chemical found to lower IQ and slow developmental growth in children.

Be wary of phthalates
Phthalates are chemicals that companies use to make plastic children furniture more flexible. You can also find them in metal children furniture, like those made of tinfoil.
These chemicals have been linked to various health problems for children and adults. They're also toxic because they mimic the hormone estrogen when they enter our bodies, leading to reproductive disorders later in life.

Buy children furniture with non-toxic lead levels
You'll want to ensure that your children furniture don't exceed the limits set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) – 100 parts per million (ppm).
The CPSC also sets a limit of 300 ppm for cadmium in children's products. You can find the allowable levels for other substances on the CPSC website.

Consider the children furniture age restrictions and warnings
Age requirements are a good indicator of the potential hazards of a toy, as they protect children from choking and electrical hazards.
Warnings can vary by country. Therefore, knowing what you're getting before buying any plastic-encased toy is important.

Buy organic children furniture
The best way to keep your children safe is by purchasing organic children furniture made with non-toxic and safe materials. They typically contain wood, cotton, wool and rubber.
They are also free of pesticides or other harmful chemicals. You can tell a toy is organic by the USDA organic label.

Choose children furniture viewed as safer
You want to avoid children furniture with toxic elements, but selecting those that are safer for your child and their development is also important.
For example, avoid children furniture made from plastic or other materials that have batteries, lights or sounds. These can expose your child to harmful chemicals such as lead and cadmium.

Take Advantage Of Your Child's Creativity
Encourage your children to use their imagination with their children furniture. They can make up stories, draw pictures and play pretend games with you.
Consider looking for children furniture that enable children to be creative, like paints, play dough and basic craft supplies. Ensure these items are labeled nontoxic.

Types of Children Furniture

Large Motor children furniture: Think basketball hoops, mini trampolines, climbing triangles, tunnels, wobble boards, etc.

Fine Motor children furniture: Things that require more precision with the hands. This piggy bank is an example. So is this Mr. Potato Head. Or this shape sorter.

Pretend Play: Our Little People are some of our favorite pretend play items (I'm gonna link my entire Toddler Play idea list here because there are SO many we love. Plus our doctor kits, pretend makeup sets, & farm scenes. I'm in the process of going through all our kitchen stuff, but since the kitchen always stays out in our playroom, I'm going to do separate bags of kitchen utensils and playfood to rotate. But you do you, sis.

Dress Up Clothes: As my kids have gotten older, they LOVE to dress up and act out pretend play with their body rather than little figurines or dolls. We've found treasure troves secondhand, but we also keep our Halloween costumes in our dress-up clothes rotation each year.

Stuffed animals: I have a really strong love-hate relationship with stuffed animals. While they are absolutely adorable, they don't get a whole lot of playtime in our house. I am hoping that as my kids get older they will begin incorporating them into their pretend play because if not, I will have held onto 500 stuffed animals from very well-intentioned family members who have no recollection of the space it requires to store said animals.

Cars/trucks/trains: This is a rapidly growing pile in our once pink-toy dominated household. I love these pull back cars as a crawling motivator. We also recently got this adorable train set. And I can't wait to take Redding out in the mud to use these.

Building things: 100% our most played-with Christmas gift is these Picasso tiles. All family members have enjoyed them so much!

Music children furniture: These are absolutely not the push and play type of music toys. My sound sensory-overloaded brain cannot handle those. But we do have lots of open-ended musical toys like this sweet Drum set. I've also had my eye on this music set for awhile!

Electronic children furniture: We really try to limit these in our house. Simply because these sorts of toys don't offer the longevity and creativity in play that other toys do. If you want more info on this, check out my Open-Ended vs Closed-Ended toy post here.

How to Clean Children Furniture

How to Clean Children Furniture in the Dishwasher
Cleaning children furniture in the dishwasher is another option. The dishwasher detergent and the hot water will do the cleaning and disinfecting work for you. If you don't have a dishwasher, wash them by hand in your sink with hot water and your normal dish detergent. Larger children furniture, Children furniture with electronic components, and wooden toys will need to be dusted and disinfected individually.

How to Clean Children Furniture with Bleach
If you are washing children furniture and children furniture only, consider adding a half-cup of bleach to your dishwasher or washing machine. If you are soaking your children furniture in the sink, we recommend adding a half-cup of bleach per gallon of water. Let the children furniture soak for about five minutes, rinse and then air dry.
Some germ-fighting parents keep a separate plastic bin that's strictly for collecting and disinfecting children furniture that have been contaminated. Once a toy has hit the dirty ground or been slobbered on, it goes directly into the bin where it is out of reach from children. Parents can then add water and bleach directly to the bin for easy cleaning.

How to Clean Children Furniture with Vinegar
For a simpler, more natural cleaning solution, consider adding equal parts water and white vinegar to a spray bottle. Spritz the dirty children furniture with the vinegar solution and let them sit for about 15 minutes. Be sure to wipe away any remaining vinegar-water solution to minimize the lingering vinegar smell. The vinegar spot cleaning method works great for hard children furniture but is not ideal for plush children furniture or stuffed animals.
