What toys are appropriate for 0-12 months babies

Nov 25, 2023

Educational toys for babies lay the foundation for their lifelong growth and development. They help develop sensory and motor skills, stimulate imagination and creativity, and promote early connections with parents and grandparents. Choosing the right toys for children aged 0-12 months can make all the difference as they begin to explore the world.

So what toys are suitable for babies 0-12 months old? Let's move on!

For small babies:
Things they can reach for, hold, suck, shake and make noises - rattles, large rings, squeeze toys, teething toys, soft dolls, textured balls, and vinyl and board books
Things to listen to – such as books of nursery rhymes and poems, and recordings of lullabies and simple songs
Things to see – pictures of faces hung so baby can see them, and unbreakable mirrors

For babies 7-12 months old:
Older babies are movers - typically they move from rolling over and sitting, to gliding, bouncing, crawling, standing up and standing. They understand their names and other common words, can identify body parts, find hidden objects, and put items in and out of containers. They require more coordination, movement and simple mental activity exercises.

Things to play with – dolls, puppets, plastic and wooden vehicles with wheels, and water toys
Things to throw away and take out – plastic bowls, large beads, balls and nesting toys
Building supplies - large soft blocks and wooden cubes
Things that use big muscles – big balls, push and pull toys, low, soft things to crawl over

The most important thing with these toys is that they are safest for babies. When choosing toys for children under 3 years old, make sure there are no small parts or pieces that could get stuck in the child's throat and cause suffocation. Additionally, it's important to remember that typical wear and tear can cause a once-safe toy to become dangerous. Adults should check toys frequently to make sure they are in good condition.
