How does grasping develop?

For the first 2 months, your baby's hands will be clenched into fists most of the time, but as he gains motor control, you'll see him start to consciously open and close his hands and even start to notice the wonderful tools before his eyes. By 3 months old, his hands should appear more relaxed.

From 3 to 4 months old, your baby's vision and ability to focus are improving, and he's working on his hand-eye coordination. During this stage, you should see him reaching for objects and patting toys. If you put something in your baby's hands, he'll probably hold it for a few seconds and try to bring it close to his face (and let's face it, his mouth!)

Baby Grasping Toys

At this point, it's a good idea to start baby-proofing your home; remove any small, dangerous objects that could pose a choking hazard or could hurt your baby if he accidentally hits himself with it.

By 5 months old, your baby can pick up larger objects, such as blocks and board books, and begin passing objects from one hand to the other. His growing interest in different sounds will also make shaking noisy toys like rattles extra fun.

Once you introduce solid foods to your baby around 6 months old, a great way to get him to practice his finger dexterity is to place smaller soft foods like peas and cooked carrots in front of him (and then bring out your "finger feedings"). A few months later, he'll be able to feed himself with a baby spoon.

How to Encourage Grasping?

The best thing a parent can do is to interact with your baby using objects of various shapes and sizes. That way, he'll be encouraged to grasp smaller items with one hand and larger objects with both hands, and develop necessary skills like reaching, opening and closing his fingers, and tracking objects that interest him. There are many great toys on the market that your baby will be eager to grasp. Here are just a few of the most popular products that incorporate bright colors, stimulating textures, and different shapes:

1) Baby Activity Gym

2) Grasping Activity Ball

3) Baby Rings and Chains

4) Wooden Rattles and Shakers

5) Baby Gym
